Dear Editor,

The condition of gaming tables in the campus game rooms are a direct reflection of the behavior and treatment of said tables by the very student patrons you claim deserve better.

The air hockey tables at both locations were damaged by students sitting on them, despite instructions and posted notices prohibiting the use of the tables as a seating area. Two ping-pong tables have been broken in half by students sitting on them. Parts of the foosball table have been snapped off and the glass-top cracked by students propping themselves and books on its side. We spent nearly $500 last year to repair the side rails on the pool tables that were broken off by - you guessed it - students sitting on them!

While it would appear obvious that we needed new seating in the game room, we were able to spend several thousand dollars this past summer to obtain new furniture for the game room at the Floyd Campus. Six brand new pub tables and 12 new high stools were purchased and placed in the game room just before the start of the fall semester. Not even half-way through the fall semester, one of the pub tables was broken…yet again by irresponsible and destructive behavior of students!

Every semester, continued mistreatment, abuse and downright disregard for the upkeep of the game room facilities by the students who frequent the space causes me to close the facility at least once each term.

The game room at the Floyd Campus has gone through three video game systems, and the Cartersville game room has burned through two video game systems. That's not even considering the half-dozen controllers that have been replaced due to breakage. Currently only the Cartersville location has a working video game system.

Not only are the large gaming tables victims of abuse and unnecessary wear, the basic gaming equipment required to play - pool cues and ping-pong paddles - are regularly broken and destroyed. Sometimes these pieces of equipment last a full semester, and other times they are smashed in record time.
